Castle Lake, Heart Lake, and Why You Should Skip the Crowds

Castle Lake is the lake everyone goes to. It’s a 10-minute drive from Mount Shasta City, paved road to the parking lot, no hike required. There’s a small swimming beach and a lot of people on it on summer Saturdays. It’s nice.

Heart Lake is the lake almost nobody goes to. It’s a 30-minute hike from the Castle Lake parking lot, up a steep but short trail, to a small alpine pond shaped like — yes — a heart, with Mount Shasta framed perfectly behind it. It is the photograph you’ve already seen of this area without knowing it. It is also empty most evenings.

The trail

Park at Castle Lake. Walk the south shore on the obvious trail along the water. At the inlet creek, the trail turns up. It’s a steady climb through fir trees, maybe 600 feet in 0.7 miles, until you pop out at a small lake basin. Heart Lake is the upper of the two.

The light

Go for sunset. The shadow of the surrounding ridge falls early on the lake itself, but Shasta stays lit for an extra 30 minutes — pink, then orange, then a slow purple. Bring a layer. Bring a headlamp for the walk down. The trail is fine in the dark if you’ve already walked it once in the light.

Swimming

Heart Lake is small and cold. You can dunk. You can’t really swim laps. The fish in the shallows are mostly minnows. If you want a real swim, do that at Castle Lake before you start the hike up.

Camping nearby

Castle Lake Campground is right at the parking lot — 6 sites, first come first served, basic. Fee was $12 last I checked. There’s also dispersed camping on the dirt roads above the lake if you’re in a van or have a high-clearance setup. The Castle Crags side has more options.

Why this is the whole vibe of 12 Hour Radius

This is exactly the kind of thing the site is for. Famous mountain. Famous lake. Two-minute drive past the famous lake to a 30-minute hike. Empty view. Sunset. Drive back to town for tacos. Sleep in the van. Home Sunday night.

You don’t have to be an athlete. You don’t need a permit. You don’t need to know anyone. You just have to be willing to walk past the first parking lot.
